"Sensors. Lots of them. Hardware-based and even software-based that will learn what you like, what you don't like, and will give you recommendations."

What a useless technology. I already have know what I like and don't need a machine to try and out guess me before I have a chance to decide for myself.

You know, technical advances are driven by the same forces that drive science fiction. Intel spends huge budgets yearly trying to predict the future usage profile of tech so that they can make the processes more efficient. It isn't at all surprising that they would hire writers to help them out. Actually I am a bit surprised to hear that they are only hiring them now. Sci-fi writers have always been involved in technology anyways. Just have a look at Arthur Clarke.

Well I think they've gone insane...Although the science fiction writers will get their share of the BIG BUCKS which will make them happy, while every body else will feel the pain of them going insane...

"Brave New World" comes to mind for some reason. Nobody can deny the power of social networking. How it will evolve with technology in the future is a scary thought, especially if the mind of a SciFi is given any sort of reign. Anyway it's easy to see FaceBook being the genesis of The World State.

I future-cast too much Sci-Fi & Hollywood making too many special effects for 3DUDHTVs with people clapping, waving & making weird gestures to fastforward, pause, & mute their Kinect controlled 32 layer Bluray 3DUHD Players... ;-)

[citation][nom]difference engine[/nom]Anybody remember that in world war 2, Robert A Heinlein and a number of other famous SF authors were doing this sort of thing (not for Intel)? Or that Arthur C Clarke was instrumental in the field of global satellite communications? Also, what percentage of the 'ubernerds' are readers of this speculative fiction- and what ideas percolated as Memes (which are the brainchild of William Gibson?[/citation]

Science Fiction author's useful patents in the last 50 years: 1
IBM useful patents in the last 50 years: approximately 1 million

Just thought some perspective was necessary.

Intel has lost their way for a long time. They stopped innovating and turned inward and essentially focused on CPU's, excluding everything else. Sure they half heartedly tried to make an ISP or GPU but the culture simply doesnt support the thinking. They are like a crack addict, they make such huge margins on CPU's they find it hard to actually compete on more commodity products.

I always thought they should have branched out into more physical sciences and products, solar cell factories, communications (buy a real telecommunications company) and other high technology science based products and services, not more of the same consumer focused PC tech.

I agree with the fact that it seems that these technology companies like Intel are trying to HIDE the technology behind a glossy cover to protect those fearful of it!!

Note to Intel: a lot of your customers do not want to be shielded from the actual technology in your products with slick marketing campaigns.

It could be a strong move, there have been numerous programs on history and discovery stating that scifi shows such as Star Trek and Star Wars were the inspiration for some of the tech we have today we may not have transporters and warp tech yet but many things we do have were inspired by creative writers on shows that aired years before industry release the item.
