If it lights up and is in the device manager, then it is turned on in the bios.

Now check to see that you have installed the Intel chipset drivers and the LAN driver for the device after the OS install (and which OS 7 or 10). This does not sound like it will be a real problem, in other words you should be able to get it working.

If you open a command prompt page and type ipconfig then hit return what gateway and device IP address are listed?

Do you have much build and network experience? Just so that I can tailor my answers to your knowledge level.
Is the computer using a static address or supposed to be getting a dynamic address from the router?

It could be many things at this point and you need to work through them in a logical fashion. Check basic stuff first like the cable and the computer on a different cable/router LAN port. What IP address is shown when you use a command prompt window and type ipconfig?

You said the card does not even recognize a cable is plugged in. Thus the card is either completely dead, or the cable/router is the problem.

Try a different computer with that cable and router port, and try a different cable and a different router port.
If all those tests work fine with the other computer then your NIC is dead and needs replaced.
Only thing I would suggest first if it is an addon card is to power down PC and reseat it.

It's the onboard LAN card and I really don't know what to do at this point.

If the LAN is turned on in the bios and you get no light on it at all when you plug in a cable it may be dead. Can you see anything about it in the device manager and did you install the chipset and LAN driver?

If the onboard dies you need to add a PCIe card or USB adapter, although for wired I greatly prefer the PCIe card.

I usually use THIS ONE[/b] as Intel is highly compatible and keeps its drivers up to date.

I can see the tiny lights when i plug in a cable and the device manager does recognize it. I'll check with the bios in a bit
