Intel i3 to i7

Solution
possibly, but it's only $100. first try to reuse your old installation key (this assumes you stop using the old computer, or at least stop using Win8.1 on it - maybe turn that old machine into a linux machine, or steam os). if that fails completely, only then you might need to buy a new 8.1 cd/key.
Usually yes but it depends on your motherboard, check your motherboard for CPU compatibility which you can find online

Basically I have a LGA 1155 i3 right now... I have a motherboard that can support 3rd/2nd gen i3/i5/i7... i just need a link to a 3rd gen i7 please

well, you have an i3-3250 (Ivy), so pick any i7 from LGA1155 that you want and plug it in. if you need a BIOS update on your motherboard, you can do that using your current i3 anyways.

now, unfortunately, there's not much left in LGA1155 anymore, so you can maybe get an i5, but that doesn't seem worthwhile.

it's easier to just buy all new-generation (LGA1150) parts. well, at least mobo + cpu. you can likely move your ram over, and obviously reuse your hard drives and power supply and whatever.

So just get a new mini-itx mobo LGA 1150 and get the i7 1150? Not sure if this is true but someone a while ago told me that sinse i used window 8.1 system builder that if i change mobo's that i will have to re-install or re-buy it... Is that true?

Thanks, are there any mini-itx mobo's that you would recommend?

depends what you're looking for. if you want to overclock, the Z87/Z97 boards are quite expensive (but then again so are all ITX). i use a Gigabyte GA-H87N-WiFi with my i3-4130 / GTX760 and it's perfect for what i need. i don't know how good the board is for running an i7 but i don't plan on changing the processor for a while (if at all).

Gigabyte, ASUS, ASRock are my favs. never had anything made by MSI or Biostar, so no idea how good/bad they are. my fav based on recent builds is ASRock, though.
