Intel i5 4690k no longer avaliable

For about two months on Amazon and Newegg, the Intel i5 4690k has been sold out and both market places have not restocked on the processor. I want to get the processor over the summer, but won't buy from 3rd party seller on Amazon or Newegg, unless it is fulfilled by the website itself. Plus, the 3rd party sellers are pricing the CPU up to $50 or more than its actually worth. Did Intel stop making the 4690k, or are they having a shortage of CPUs?

It's more likely they've stopped producing the CPU since the Sky Lake and Kaby Lake processors are out.

i5-6xxx and i5-7xxx series = new and in stock

Well that's a bummer. I was hoping Intel would make the CPU for a little more longer. Was not expecting them to cut prediction this quickly.

let me guess you've already got a mobo? or are you upgrading?

Get one now, whist you still can by looking elsewhere, or go secondhand.

I already have the mobo with the Pentium G3258 and looking to upgrade. Great CPU, but I need the extra cores from the i5.

As for second hand, I almost always buy brand new as it will have a factory warranty if something goes wrong. Some used sellers on Amazon are also pricing the CPU upwards of $50 or more than its actually worth. So I might buy used, but only if I can find a very good deal.

Things are worth whatever people will pay for them, with limited supply the price will go up.

Honestly, as far as CPUs are concerned it's pretty safe to get them from third parties since they rarely break. Obviously there is the risk that someone overclocked that "k" CPU. I have no idea about US but here most websites offer some buyer protection.

Intel's ark lists the 4690k as end of life. Expected discontinuance is 7/14/17. It's going on 3yrs old and it's technically 3 generations behind if you count broadwell. It's not uncommon for discontinued cpu's from intel to go up in price, it happens with all of them. A 4670k or 3570k is more expensive new than a 6600k or 7600k. When the 4690k was the newest cpu the 2500k's were more expensive new in box.

As others suggested your best bet is to find one used off ebay or similar. Using paypal and purchasing from someone with a fairly high transaction rate and positive feedback along with doa warranty (those who state they will replace/refund of product arrives dead in their ad) should be fairly safe. You might get lucky with a winning bid and pay less, some are selling used nearly for what they cost new back when they were available.

Still a cheaper alternative than buying a new motherboard, 6th or 7th gen i5 and ddr4 ram along with reinstalling windows all over again. Even if the price for the cpu seems a little expensive, overall the upgrade would still be significantly less with just a fraction of performance loss compared to a 6th/7th gen.

Sadly I don't live anywhere near a Microcenter. Closest one to me is in Atlanta Georgia, which is a 200 mile drive from Florida. There is Ebay, and I saw some pretty good deals with reputable sellers.

Yep, my best bet would be with Ebay. I did win an auction for a non electronic product for a really good bargin, so I might give it a shot with the i5 if I don't find anything within my price range.

You may find that smaller shops still have stock that they need to get rid of, so check locally.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll buy used on Ebay from a reputable seller, and get a good deal as well. I'll also check locally for some CPU deals as well.
