Hi there,

i have had a dilemma as I bought a 9590 and didn't realise the short supply, not to forget expense in parts, I am looking to buy one of these two but I want to know which is best for me...

I will 80% of the time be Gaming but, I will also use for the odd research and quite often for Homework as I'm still a Student, what should i get?

Solution
There is no 6400k, its just 6400 its not overclockable.

Note gaming benchmarks here where its equal to or faster than the 8350:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/core-i5-6400-cpu-review/7/

And the best part. If you want more performance, you're a BIOS update and CPU purchase away from an i7-7700k which is the best gaming CPU. With the 8350 there is NO upgrade path.

the i5, 6400k or 6400T? possibly will give you better performance on games

for the rest is possible that the 8 cores on the 8350 will give you better experience, editing videos and similar load

i am a amd fanboy, so i would get the fx, but i have to be honest so the i5 could be a better option

also, if you plan on upgrade machine later, the fx has no upgrade path other than buy a ryzen r7 or r5 and a mainboard with ram

the i5 has a couple of options still available to upgrade

if you have not going parts shopping yet.look for the newer intel 270 chipset and newer intel cpu. if you have a local micro center they do have combo deals on both. the other cpu if your low on funds is the newer amd cpu that have dropped. both intel and newer amd cpu use ddr4 ram and have the newers usb and pci tech on the mb. both new amd and intel mb you can use the newer m2 pci ssd. both amd and intel and nvidia and amd are dropping new product every 12-18 months now. when the newer cpu drop they may not use the same pin outs as the older mb. when you go parts building try and pick up the newer mb so that you dont have to swap the mb or cpu out for a few years.

not low power, low heat and low noise, for mini itx cases, very small ones is ideal the i5 6400t but is a not powerful cpu, just 2.2 ghz and turbo at 2.8ghz

it is preferable the i5 6400 but the good thing is that uses lga 1151 socket

No, it is low power. It has a 35w tdp compared to the 65w tdp of the 6400. On top of that it has clearly lower clocks, its not for gaming and shouldn't even be part of what this OP is considering.

@atljsf the 6400T is not suitable for a gaming computer or any normal desktop for that matter. That CPU is meant for tiny systems like a home theater PC where it's not going to be getting proper airflow and has to fit in a very tight space. I can't really think of a good use case for it unless you need a lot of HDD storage, because any other situation you'd want to use it in, a NUC would be a better purchase.

yes, that is what i wrote, mini itx with heat and airflow problems

it is not a low tdp cpu like one of the hq cpus for laptops, but is around that

anyway, the best option thiing in the future is the intel, the fx, only if it is found really cheap and will be used as hard as possible, some overclking and then replace it with a mainboard, cpu and ram combo

To OC you need a more expensive Z170 or Z270 motherboard keep that in mind.

The 212 EVO is a bit long in the tooth there are better air coolers out there. The CRYORIG H7 is far better, as is the Deepcool GAMMAX, or Noctua NH-U12s or U14s.

Of course a faster CPU is always better, either one would be good, just depends on your budget.

Sample i5-6600K build:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£216.00 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler (£40.40 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: MSI Z170-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£100.47 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £356.87

I would suggest the Cryorig H7 (better cooling performance than the CM 212 EVO). But if you really prefer the EVO, then it would be:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£216.00 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£23.99 @ Ebuyer)

Total: £340.46
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you opt for the non-overclockable CPU (i5-7500 or i5-7600), then:

CPU: Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£187.99 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI B250 PC MATE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£91.80 @ Alza)
Total: £279.79

or

Question from PapaShand : "What OC could I expect with this 6600K setup?"

Change the CPU Cooler to the Cryorig H7, best price/performance cooling on the market. On paper you should be able to OC to 4.4-4.6Ghz but It's still all about sillicon lottery.

Power supply depends on which graphics card you're getting.

DDR4-2666+ RAM recommended, 8GB is good enough, 16GB is great.

He is, I have been working with him in another thread, but that thread is solved (not to use the 9590).

Sorry, I am staying on this post now, can anyone help me? I need help finishing off this build... https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/YspfGf

I would prefer a PSU pretty cheap and EVGA branded but if the Gold is really that good in comparison to other options then just give me a suggestion... Thanks! :)

The non-G2 EVGA units are not good quality.

However if you're really on a budget this is not a bad way to go:

Rogue Leader, I went with the EVGA SuperNova G2 650 Watts at the moment because, first of all it is quality but secondly it is actually cheaper then the 550 Watts version, should I be geting this as it's cheaper for more or will it cause problems due to so much spare wattage? Thanks. :)
