I was curious is someone could tell me exactly what the letters mean?

I know K is unlocked.

What does F mean? KF?

I was looking at the i5 10400 and the i5 9600.

But the 10400 comes with no letters or 10400F.

I saw the 9600 was either with a K or KF.

The T suffix processors were lower wattage versions of the base processor; they were slower.

To add to the complexity.
for 9th gen processors and earlier, i3 meant 2 cores and 4 threads via hyperthreading.
I5 meant 4 cores, some with hyperthreading and 8 threads, some not.
The G prefix process were not overclockable.
But there was an outlier, the G3258 which was overclockable without a K sufffix.
Then, the i5 had the 15-3350P with 4 cores, no hyperthreading and no integrated graphics.

Now,
10th gen i3-10100 is is a 4 core, 8 thread processor.
The i5-10400 is 6 cores with 12 threads.
I7 like the i7-10700K has 8 cores and 16 threads via hyperthreads.
i9-10900 has 10 cores and 20 threads.

Not confusing enough?
Then look into the mobile versions.

Bottom line-------------------
Look at the Intel specs for any processor you are considering.

To add to the complexity.
for 9th gen processors and earlier, i3 meant 2 cores and 4 threads via hyperthreading.
I5 meant 4 cores, some with hyperthreading and 8 threads, some not.
Actually 7th Gen and earlier desktop i3s were 2c/4t. 8th and 9th Gen moved the i3 to 4c/4t and then 10th Gen went 4c/8t.
7th Gen and earlier desktop i5s were 4c/4t and moved to 6c/6t on 8th and 9th Gen before going 6c/12t on 10th Gen.

I find that the integrated graphics adapter is very useful when building a pc. I would select that option always unless the price differential is significant.
In the event of a problem with a discrete graphics card, you can always fall back to the integrated graphics.

So another general question

The 9600k is unlocked but the 10400 is a newer chip.

I am slowing buying parts over the next 2 or 3mos, would that make it smarter to go for a 10th gen over a 9th?
