Hi everyone! So here's the situation:
My graphics card is very old, and is starting to work less efficiently/break. Upon ordering a replacement, the Radeon r9 380, I found out it's not compatible with my motherboard. The issue is, the current processor is an i7-2600, which uses an LGA 1155 socket, which are very old. Looking for new processors with more updated sockets so I can get a newer motherboard, the i5-4690K looked decent, but CPU Benchmark says it's about 550 points worse than the 2600. Is that because the 2600 has 2 logical cores per physical core? How much does that really matter in a practical situation? Price isn't necessarily a huge object, but obviously low price high quality is preferred. Any advice here is appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: It turns out that the Dell XPS 8300 BIOS is incompatible with the R9 380. Thank you all so much for the help, I truly appreciate it!

Solution

I know companies who block/do not allow upgrades in the mobo bios. Maybe Dell's bios just isn't capable.

My local store had it in stock, unless you live in Belgium, I can't recommend a store :/
Maybe this can help, it's the official MSI site. https://www.msi.com/service/wheretobuy#10,3,

Hmmm, well the $500-$600 is definitely doable. I noticed that I would probably end up with more new parts than old ones early on in this adventure haha! A new OS license isn't the end of the world, just a moderate inconvenience. Mr Hat mentioned the i5-6500 and B150M motherboard combination which looks very appealing. I assume a new case would also probably be in order where the current one is the default XPS 8300 as well?

It almost looks like it was never available in the USA. None of their stores for anywhere in the US have it/look like they've ever had it. Congrats on landing such a cool looking motherboard though! Do you suppose any B150M will do the trick?

I'm pretty sure it would, but just to be a 100% sure: Select your B150(M) of choice, and check if the socket is 1151, should be on the official site of the mobo company. Good luck! Don't forget to select the best answer!

Alrighty! Thanks a bunch to both of you, I really appreciate it, and good luck with your future endeavors in computer building and SUPER RAD looking motherboards!

You too!
