Hi,

My rig is going to be equipped with i7 4770K. Basically, I am going to use it for browsing and some office work and therefore I am wondering whether discrete GPU to handle graphics is still needed. Is integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 enough?

Thanks.

Solution
the 4600 igpu can run battlefield 3, so it should be able to handle office work just fine. if the rig is just for browsing and office work, why not save and get a 4670k, it is cheaper, and while it has less threads, it has the same gpu as the 4770k. even the 4670k is overkill, tbh

If all this system is going to run is Office, then yes, any modern integrated GPU is enough. I'm handling 300+ page Word files on an old Intel 845G graphics card with no issues.

However, If you're going to spend the money, at least get 8GB of RAM plus a SSD. This will make a bigger difference then the higher CPU. I honestly can't tell the difference between my 2Ghz Core2Duo and a brand new i5-3570K system when it comes to Word. I do notice a HUGE difference between my system and the i5-3570K system with no SSD, and an AMD APU system with a SSD installed.

that's a waste of a CPU...
you could downgrade and then use those funds to possibly upgrade surrounding hardware.
also you could go for a cheaper build all together and handle such intended tasks.

Thanks for your input. My only concern was the integrated GPU and the ability to handle some basic office work. In terms of CPU, is has to stay as it is since the machine will also be used for computational research along with Tesla K20 GPGPU. I didn't mention it at the beginning since it was not relevant for the question.

it's always relevant.. :)
