Hi.. i want i7 7700 with ASUS B250 or R7 1700 with ASUS B350, for gaming.
which one is the better CPU if i am not doing OC?
the base clock of the R7 1700 is just 3GHz, is that critical?
thanks in advance..

Solution
The easy choice here is the R7 1700 for multiple reasons. It'll be a bit slower in games but it offers several benefits that the 7700 doesn't. 1. It on the AM4 socket which AMD will stick with until 2020 which means it has an upgrade path, the 7700 has no upgrade path. 2. It's an 8 core which means you can multitask like a champ. If you decide to dabble into game streaming or video editing you'll have no troubles. 3. You can overclock the 1700 on a B350 motherboard unlike the 7700 which can't be overclocked unless you get a 7700k and a Z series chipset.
So it doesn't have minimums higher than 100 FPS in most games as you stated.

good for you... in my place Ryzen 1700 priced like i7 7700, and 8700K is 60$ more. :)

Glad to know some people here are so wrong, for gaming the i7 7700k will do a lot better than any RYZEN cpu, here the i7 7700K against the more powerful Ryzen 1800X: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/amd-ryzen-benchmarks,review-4232.html

And in Tom's Guide all of our gaming set ups have intel processors : https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-gaming-pc,review-2219.html

Why? because if the sole purpose is gaming, nothing beats an intel processor at gaming.

this post is about the i7 7700, not 7700K..

Sorry I down voted you, it was a mistake.. ill rather have the 8700 any day

For gaming the i7 7700 still better period.

The original comparison was an i7 7700 (non-k model) vs an R7 1700. Both are valid gaming processors. Will an i7 7700 (non-k) beat an R7 1700 in a drag race when it comes to gaming? sure. are you going to notice the difference between 100 fps vs 80 fps at max settings at 1920x1080? doubtful. at 2560x1440 they both provide roughly the same fps as the gpu becomes the bottleneck at that point. Streaming, the R7 1700 provides a better experience. My personal issue with the i7 7700 (non-k) and the kaby lake platform in general is it is a dead socket. there are no further upgrades planned for it whereas with AM4, you are good until 2020. that means you can get a ryzen today and in a year put in a ryzen+ or even possibly a ryzen 2 in it without having to completely overhaul your core system.

At the end of the day, either processor will provide an enjoyable experience, however one socket is EOL and the other socket is just beginning its life cycle

to me it all depends on how you want to play it out with your rig. some said going with AMD is better because upgrade options but if you are not the type to upgrade on regular basis that probably not an issue at all. for example right now i'm still using my 2500K (from 2012). if i want to upgrade right now i would still have to get new mothboard and RAM for it. even for AMD they will not going to keep their socket for that long. people that opt for FX series back in 2011-2012 are on the same boat as me.

second there is always saying "why go with much faster and expensive CPU when the much slower and cheaper CPU can get you pretty much the same result?" again not an issue if you upgrade on regular basis. but it will show it differences if you like to keep your stuff longer.
