Hey guys,
it's been almost 5 years since I got my PC and I think it's time to start thinking about upgrading. I have something on my mind, but I'm not sure whether it'll work or not.
So, I want to get the Intel i7-7700K, but I'll have to upgrade my motherboard and RAM as well (as I got a DDR3 memory now). I'm not on a very high budget and I think I should go for the MSI H110M PRO-VH motherboard. Thing is, I'm not sure if it supports the CPU. I read that I should first get some Skylake to update the BIOS and then go for the 7700K, which I can't do. On top of all I need to get a DDR4 RAM because all LGA1151 socket mobos do not support DDR3.
Any ideas what I should do? Thanks!

You heard it right. H110 motherboard may have already updated BIOS, but you can't bet on this, also you could not OC this CPU on such motherboard.
For similar price you could be better getting i5-8400 and cheap Z370 motherboard, again with DDR4 RAM.
If you wait a little while (no idea how long that is), the non-Z 300 series boards will be out, giving an option of the 8000's. So either 6 real cores, or 6+6HT.

If you get a 100 series board and a 7th gen CPU expect issues as you may need a bios update before the CPU will work, and to do that you generally need a 6th series CPU, so a 200 series board is the better choice for a 7700K. Be sure to get an oversized cooler for the 7700k.

Agreed

.i7s not worth it if you don't need HT. Forget skylake. Prices haven't dropped far enough to consider a worthwhile investment.

To the poster - What you going to be using your new pc for? for gaming? General use. Video editing?

I'll be using it for general use and some gaming. I'm just looking to buy the best possible parts with the budget I'm on as I want them to work for a couple more years, I can't upgrade that often.

then you want z370 mobo with a i5 8400

Z370 with an i5-8400 sounds good to me. Do you think it'll work well with a Radeon R9 270 until I get a new GPU?
Also, if I get the parts and change them, will I have to reinstall my Windows 10? I've never upgraded PC parts before.

yes

yes, it is a smart idea to reinstall windows after major hardware changes

Okay, thanks a lot. I'll see now if I'm gonna go for the i7-7700 and Z270 or 8400 with the Z370. Cheers!
