Intel i7 cores

I have an MSI GX780 Laptop running Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M. My Operating system is Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Can anyone tell me why suddenly my rig has slowed and only shows 2 of the 4 cores in Resources Monitor. It all seemed to happen about the time of a recent connect to windows update which appeared to fail so I used system restore and undid the update.

Send a screenshot of the resource monitor. Also open up the control panel and tell us what it says under processors in device manager.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have thought about it but been reluctant to until I verify it is not a hardware failure even though the problem started as a result of an update. Updating again will be the last item in the process regardless though.

You won't make it worse by attempting an update again. Have you tried using system restore to travel back to a point before the update?

I have not tried that yet. There is only one restore point further back resulting from a system reformat about 7 moths ago, so I would have to do some backing up to an alternate drive before attempting. Mainly due to the mess I have in my Thunderbird email client from a messy upgrade there which I decided to live with.

Best of luck mate. I'm probably going to head off the forums for a few days, but a system restore should work if you can back up all your important files from the past seven months.

You can also try and look in the bios to see whether cores are disabled if the option is there.
