Intel i7 delidding

I have just read about the process of delidding the i7 and looking at the photos, it would appear that my (old) i7-4710MQ appears to be already "delidded", it's just a PCB with the shiny metal chip in the centre, there is nothing over it, other than the laptop's heatsink of course.

Did Intel start glueing heatsinks over their CPUs at some stage?

Yes mostly the higher end CPU's have whats called a CPU heat spreader. Below is an image with it removed circled in green.
