Hello!

I plan on buying a gaming PC which i wanna build up myself, but I got a question about the performace for gaming of the following 2 processors:

- i5 4690
or
- i7 4790

I won't overclock my system so I wouldn't take the K versions. The rest of my setup will be:

- Motherboard: H97 something from Asus or MSI
- Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 2x8GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or 970

Which processor of those 2 do you think is better in price/performance for gaming League of Legends, Minecraft modpacks with shader, Heroes of the Storm, Garrys Mod, GTA V and games like that?

Thanks for every help :)

I really appreciate that nice idea, but I think I would like to stick to the i5 or i7 more than buying a Xeon :)

Why forget the Xeon? Dont follow what others say about it being bad for gaming and just for servers, the 1231 is identical to any haswell i7 in gaming and anything else. The only real difference is the lack of integrated graphics.

I would choose the GTX960 or GTX970 over the R9 280X based on comments here: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/04/27/grand_theft_auto_v_single_gpu_performance_review_part_1/7
The R9 280X uses an older architecture. If it meets your current needs, I'd probably get a GTX960 now (possibly a 4GB version), with an intent to upgrade it (if necessary) after AMD releases their 300 series and prices have settled a little.
If you are even thinking about SLI, make sure your chosen motherboard supports it; I'm not sure any H97 boards support SLI, so you would need to step up to a Z97 board. Even then, lower-end ones might not support SLI (even if they support Crossfire).

Well OK. Because you guys said, I just looked it up:

Xeon E3-1231 V3: 275€
i5 4460: 190€
i5 4690: 230€
i5 4690K: 255€
i7 4790: 320€
i7 4790K: 360€

So the 4460 is the cheapest, followed by 4690 and that K, and then comes the Xeon...

i5-4460 is a great processor for the money. Stock cooler works fine. My 4440 (basically the same thing) doesn't get above 65c under full load.

For your GPU it would help to know the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor. But a 960/280 will handle 1080p just fine for plenty of games without AA enabled. A 970/290 will let you turn on more eyecandy. 280X would be in-between the two. If you have a 1080p 144Hz monitor I would go for the 970 or 290.

So if I get the i5 4460 or 4690, which GTX 960 or 970 is a good one?

OK, and what model or which manufacturer? Any suggestions?

Well look at like this you get an i5 and you can play many games in with good FPS rates with the 970 or 960. The i7 will be for games that are just badly optimised eg. AC unity which runs smoother on i7 or FX 8350 compared to the i5.

If you my friend have the money go for i7 with 970, if not a 970 substitute it with 290x or 290 will do just as well mate, it plays games a decent fps on 1440p too. I just say i7 for the games that are poorly optimised and can use i7's features to run smoother. i5 on the other hand is still good enough mate, and don't bother waiting for skylake the performance against i5(46xx) or i7(47xx) will not be a big difference.

Thanks for the help :) I think I'll get a i5 and a GTX 970 :)
