You need a *newer* system.
But for the vast majority of use cases, this is still way too expensive for little gain.

7x the price of SATA III SSD
860 EVO, 500GB, $86
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S

5x the price of NVMe SSD
970 EVO, 500GB, $140
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-500GB-MZ-V7E500BW/dp/B07BN4NJ2J

905P 380GB, $500

If you were running a data center, and needed some of these for the OS drives, or to run your SQL scripts from, sure. The price may be worth it, because it is making you actual money.
But for any standard use, you will not see any performance increase close to 5x or 7x over the other types of SSD.

5 years from now, they may be at a reasonable price for the average person or gamer.

I already have few Intel Optane 900P on my Workstation i9 7940X Comptuer and Gaming Computer.. (Intel Optanes 900P/905P Probably worth as much than a i9 X-Series computer)
;)

The prices is the reason why customers more likely not to buy and why Micron decided to cutoff their 3D xPoint partnership.

Reviewers do report that you can feel the change in responsiveness of the system when using these drives. For people who spend all day working at a machine (40-50 hours a week) I can see that being worth it even if you are not a true power user.

Especially if you can get the company to pay for it or write it off as an office expense.

The article says that these m.2 drives will be slower than the add in cards. Why do they need to be ? it is the same tech and the same interface standard. I don't remember the m.2 Optane cache drives being slower.

I believe in the movie Mad Max there was a auto shop with a sign that read : Speed is money, how fast do you want to go?

"feel the change", from what previous setup?
HDD->SSD...huge change
SSD->NVMe....not so much. Much smaller change.
NVMe->Optane...We're chasing diminishing returns here.

I'm going to raid together 16 optane drives and have my games load before I launch them! I'm going to have to use Intel's chiller aren't I. You know we're going to see people on the forums actually raiding these too, that's the funny part. Idk I don't do anything major with my computer but I was kind of underwhelmed by the switch to nvme from my 850 evo in the first machine I switched over but now that SSD prices are so much better and I have more and larger nvme drives I just can't see optane ssd's being necessary for any joe schmo. I'm sure it has a use case but nvme is darn fast.

"We've never experienced a system that felt as fast and responsive as our workstation with the 900P as the operating system drive, and that’s largely due to the explosive random read performance at low queue depths."

"The Intel Optane SSD 900P delivered the best user experience we've ever had."

"You will see and feel a performance benefit just by using the Optane SSD 900P as your operating system drive. The feel of the system changes even if you’re replacing a high-performance NVMe SSD. You will notice the increased responsiveness immediately and then gradually become accustomed to it. In our experience, you will take the performance for granted until you work on a slower PC. Then you'll wish it had an Optane SSD."

But I won't be buying one. The NVMe SSD I have is already underutilized and most of my money is spoken for.

Got an 900P (480gb) and the only time it shows noticeable difference vs an good m2 (in my case an 970 pro 1tb) is when doing zillion subops db workloads so my advice unless you do such rare loads where it matters - Get an 970 pro or similar for the money and get way more high-perf storage for the same money!

Simply put, today's software isn't equipped to use such insane storage to make it matters beside a few rare odd jobbs here and there.

When I win the powerball I'm ordering 2 of these to raid 0.

It's okay to spend $10000 on a PC when its less than a 100th of a percent of your money.

It will work in any board that has a 22110 M.2 slot, but very few board have support for 22110. They mostly support only up to 2280. However, you still could put it in a M.2-to-PCIe adapter card and then install it into any PCIe slot. Of course, then why would bother buying the M.2 version, just get the PCIe version to begin with.
