Which is better between the G3258 and the I3-4170 if you overclock the Pentium to around 4ghz?
Also how does the AMD X4 860k compare to those 2?

Solution
The i3-4170 is a little gem of a processor, I can't find the benchmarks right now but I was doing some research the other week and with it's very high clock speed and hyper threading it actually outperformed several of the lower clocked Haswell I5's in some gaming tests.

I would only choose the Pentium if I was on a really tight budget or wanted to play with overclocking but even then I think the Athlon would be a better bet for budget overclocking.
The I3 is much better than the G3258 OC'ed at 4 GHz , because of its hyperthreading and very high clock speed.
The x4 860k has about the same performance as the G3258, but it's slower than the I3.
So if you wanna buy one of them you should definitely go for the I3-4170

Well yes, but clocked on around 4.3-4.5ghz?I can underdtand that the I3 is better but is there really that much of a difference....it's 2 times more cheaper tough and those savings could really help me

The I3-4170 is better even against a pentium G3258 OC'ed at 4.5 GHz but if you are on a tight budget go for the G3258

i think the G is great but it's kind of like OC'ing-training-wheels. in and of itself it's nice but it'll lead you to an i5-k or i7-k, whereas an i3 will likely be what it is and you might stick with it.

if i were to go i3, i'd go 4370 though. i went 4130 which is fine but sometimes i wish i had gone better.

Depends on what you want to do with it at the end of the day. I just finished my build with a g3258 and its OCed to 4.3 Ghz. I really cant even tell if anything any "better" would help me. I'm NOT gaming only doing spread sheets, streaming video/movie, web use, and downlaods. I actually downloaded 227 windows updates after I finished the build, while on youtube, transferring music from Ext HDD to my new HDD, and had Blackboard up doing school work.(Double monitor) I can tell you I never had an issue with any hesitation, freezing or skipping, nor any other thing to have a complaint about. I don't know what answer you're looking for. All I know is no matter how many applications I have open and running I seem to get instantaneous response. Unless I decide to start gaming, and by that I mean serious gaming, or 3d video editing I doubt I'll be upgrading as soon as I originally thought. Hope this helps your decision somehow.

My toughts were, that first:With the moneys that I'm saving I could buy a 960 (which is 300$ in my country...yes, I know...dem import taxes)....and honestly right now....In 2 years 50% of the games will have 4 core minimum req (Like FarCry4)///so why I would invest in a I3 even though I'm not going to play demanding games (GTA V, BF4-playing those, but more of a exception), that anyway a G3258+GTX 960 can run them....I was going to change the CPU anyways in 2 years...not really care about a retail value, I won't sell the chip anyways,...I ll put it into my sister Mini=ITX system or something ":))

kinda funny to mix times, isn't it? today you're worrying about how last year's chip is going to work with games that are 3+ years into the future. by the time you buy those games, you'll likely be buying a new processor anyways so who cares what today's processor can do in 3 years. and seeing how people here buy graphics cards, you'll have bought & sold at least 5 by then anyways.

my bottom line = who cares. buy today, use today. when you hit a wall in 2-5 years, buy whatever makes sense THEN. tech changes way too quickly to plan that far ahead of time. plan the money, not the parts.

I had an FX-6300 overclock to 4.4 Ghz and there was exactly one game it was better than a G3258 @ 4.5 Ghz with and that was the horribly optimized Watchdogs. I surely wouldn't spend money on a new AM3+ motherboard at this late stage of the game.

I agree with the previous answer. AM3+ platform will have no future upgrades and it is also quite dated. If if i were on a budget or already have an AM3+ I would consider an fx 8350 maybe (about 20$ more than the i3). That would give you. the best performance for the price. Still, I would save some more and go with intel cpu.

I will chime in on this one and say i recommend against even going with the fx 8350.

i3's are on par with the fx 8350 in quite a few games

I use to own the 8350
