So i'm looking to upgrade some of my kind of out of date hardware like my cpu and motherboard and just build a completely new system. Now i havent used intel in like 12 years, i've always had AMD processors, which i'm still very fond of. I eventually jumped ship in regards to GPU's now i absolutely love Nvidia's cards over AMD's. Perhaps now this is the time i should switch to Intel cpu's?

In my newegg basket i've got the i5-8600k and the MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON motherboard. But from my time spent researching amd's Ryzen 7's seem to be doing just as good as intels, or perhaps better. So now there appears to be a lot of competition(for once Intel isnt dominating).

So what are your thoughts on a Intel cpu + mobo, or a amd ryzen 7 + mobo. I'm torn between the 2 and i cant decide which route i want to go with. Seems to be too close performance wise.

I agree. Some Ryzen 5 chips are cheaper and are great for gaming and pretty much everything else,

It depends on your usage.

For Straight gaming fps an unlocked & overclocked coffee lake will still win over any ryzen cpu.
The gains aren't anywhere close to what they used to be though.

In almost any other scenario a ryzen 7 cpu is Stronger than a 6 core i5.

Your combo, bearing in mind the u5 will require $50 worth of cooler comes to around $520

A ryzen 2700x & the msi b450 gaming pro carbon comes to $470.Comes with a decent rgb cooler & is $50 less in total.

For me personally it's a no brainer, I'd go ryzen everytime now.

Yeah i'm leaning towards the 8600k. It's cheaper than the 2700x, which will allow me to raise my budget for perhaps a better motherboard, or some stupid outrageous case like the Deepcool Quadsteallar which just looks so damn awesome, i think i need to have that lol.

So if i was to go with the 8600k, what motherboard(s) would you suggest going with? I'm particularly fond of Asus and MSI as ive never had any problems in the past with theyre motherboards so theyre both my preferred manufacturer but i'd be open to hearing your thoughts on any others i may have missed.

Is there not a big improvement to performance between the 2700 and 2700x to justify the additional 50-60$? I'm all for going cheaper without sacrificing performance then i can squeeze in some extra goodies, like maybe go liquid cooling(for the first time), luckily i dont need a gpu or a psu. choice of ram is pretty obvious G.skill Trident Z, those sticks are so nice, if i save enough money on the cpu and motherboard i'd definitely go and get 32gb instead of 16 to start.

Now im steering more towards a Ryzen 7 now, and the fact it comes with a cooler which may or may not be better than the one i currently have, which would be a disappointment if it turned out to be not as great.

Performance difference isnt massive, especially considering they both OC very similarly.
I would put the money towards a nice air cooler if you plan on OCing, liquid cooling may seem nice but all in all its generally a waste on a system that does not run flagship hardware.

Yeah, i'm definitely not going to be running no flagship hardware making some ludicrous computers like you'd see on the LinusTechTips youtube channel. So regards to good air coolers, do you have any recommendations, i see there's quite a bit of options out there, so once again its pretty hard to choose since im unfamiliar with anything other than the usual case fans, ive never really ran into any overheating issues so upgrading to something more advanced wouldnt be a bad idea.

BeQuiet's darkrock series is popular, as is nocuta big air.
About the same price as good liquid coolers (120mm are a serious waste), similar if not better performance than most AIOs, and much quieter.

I'm in the market for a new case as well and i just came across this Deepcool Genome II which has liquid cooling built into it, and its way less cheaper than some of the cases ive been eyeballing(I'm looking at you QUADSTELLAR). 188$ for a really great looking case without the need to buy additional cooling hardware seems like a worthy investment to me so i can ditch the cpu cooler i currently have, which i dont even remember what its called, and save money in the process. So many decisions to make. But i think im def gonna go with ryzen 2700, or maybe the 2700x if i dont mind spending a little bit more money, and the msi pro carbon board, which will then just come down to getting proper cooling where possible.

Hm, appears that Genome II case has some pretty severe leaking problems. Guess i should probably avoid it then.

Cases to me are one of the hardest componets to pick, since theres a bazillion to choose from, and of course you gotta pick something you find aesthetically pleasing to look at. Sadly for me i always find myself attracted to the...absurdly huge cases that stand out like the Deepcool Quadstellar. Currently using a Thermaltake level 10 GT which is a great case,

I have yet to try any case from Cooler Master, which ive never heard a single bad thing about any of their cases and know their HAF series are godly. Which i just so happened to lay my eyes on this little beauty. http://www.coolermaster.com/case/lan-box/haf-xb/

It's a super old case, im watching Linus Tech Tips review on it from 6 years ago. I definitely wouldnt mind a cube case, it'll be a welcome change from these massive super towers i keep going with that end up weighing 100lbs.

I have been sticking with cooler master parts for the last 7 years or so.I got myself the coolermaster MB500 with my ryzen 2600 built but......it forced me to go liquid cooler as non of the air coolers could fit in this case.Only has 160depth and all the coolers around here are 165mm +.

That MB500 is a very nice looking case. Love the edge to edge tempered glass window, just wish it was plain so i could customize my own design onto it. Shame to hear the 160 depth for air coolors. I wouild like to go with liquid cooling, but ive heard way to many stories of it leaking and literally destroying every component, which is something i want to avoid. the HAF XB is nice, i like how the motherboard sits horizontal, and looks significantly easier to move around

Well whatever case i decide on, i will def go with a Cooler Master.

I have the Cooler Master H500P Mesh and can only say it is simply fantastic both to build in and the airflow and cooling is second to none...As to the age old question on AMD or Intel, the route I would take is just ask yourself what resolution you will be playing at and does high refresh rates matter to you....

For 1080P High refresh rate, then Intel and the 8600K/9700K/8700K is very hard to beat and as importantly overclocks extremely well to 5GHz if you are into squeezing more out later...Your choice of Z390 is spot on as at least if the prices of the 9700K or 9900K ever come down in a couple of years it is a straight swap so you do have an upgrade path...

On the other hand, if value is important and you want to do a LOT more than just gaming and I mean semi professional workloads, then the Ryzen's truly come into there own...They may not be the fastest at gaming but at 1440P and 4K the CPU really does not matter and the GPU matters a lot more...though be careful when workloads like editing, encoding etc come into play as the 8th and 9th Gen Intel CPU's will also do a great job for lite moderate workloads..

Overall it is very hard to make a bad choice, it just comes down to money and what you want as both AMD and Intel are valid choices...

Would recommend AMD if you want to sink more money somewhere else. But you need dual channel 3000+ RAM.

Games are going more multithreaded and you can always upgrade to the next series chip when AMD goes to 7nm in the next 18 months if there’s dramatic performance gains.

I don't intend on doing anything other than gaming, would love to run 4k resolution on as many games as possible. So i think i will go down the Intel route and pick up the i5-8600k and https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813144212&ignorebbr=1 unless someone has a better suggestion for the motherboard

With 32GB of G.skill TridentZ, the i5-8600k and that motherboard im looking at 806$. I just need to decide on the case, or save money and use my Thermaltake level 10 GT so i can spend some money on maybe some good cooling. Perhaps a Corsair H100i or something. I'm set for my PSU and GPU for awhile

So in regards to thread count and cores. the damn near 600$ Intel Core i9-9900K is way out my price range, not that i cant afford it, but i'm not spending 600$ when i can spend half that on a Ryzen and have same core/thread count, then the extra money i save can go towards maybe a better cpu cooler unless the Wraith Prism cooler that comes with it performs really well.

Have any motherboard suggestions to pair up with the Ryzen 7? MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON is probably what i would choose, but its currently out of stock on newegg and amazon, so id imagine its a pretty bitching board if its selling out everywhere.

But the 9900K is the best CPU on the market 😉 don’t forget the Z390 board you’d really need for it.

I’ve been using the B450 MSI Mortar board and it’s been great. The ATX variant is the Tomahawk I believe. If you can’t get a gaming pro (can’t vouch for as I’ve never used) either of those should do you just fine. Remember you need 3000+ MHz ram.

With CPU cooler it’s always something you can add later. You won’t have as much headroom overclocking with the AMD box cooler but they are much better than what ships with intel so they’re at least useable. My advice would be spend all you can on performance and get things like CPU coolers etc later on when you have spare cash.

Also don’t buy the most expensive R7. If you want 2nd gen get the lowest priced R7 2xxx and overclock it.

Yeah i dont need the best cpu on the market, especially not for that price. I think i'll go with the R7 2700, i'll upgrade to 32GB of G.skill TridentZ 3200.

G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200
AMD RYZEN 7 2700 8-Core 3.2 GHz
As for the case, i will probably go with the Cooler Master MasterCase H500M.

Mobo still deciding on. Not sure what chipset i want to go with X470 or B450
