Intel Xeon 1231 or i7 6700k or i7 5820k?

So, as you see there are 3 cpu's that I like to choose from.
And yes, I'm going to use the hyperthreading for rendering, video editing and multitasking. I'm not just going to game otherwise I would have chosen the i5.

So with the i7 6700k and i7 5820k you need DDR4 and xeon DDR3

Which of these cpu's would be the best choice?

i7-6700k £295.
Has integrated graphics
more powerful than xeon 1231
vs i7 5820k - better clock & turbo clock, 14nm so better cooling, lower consumption, better clock speed, better overclocking
vs xeon 1231 - better clock speed, over clocking, 14nm so better cooling, better single core

i7 5820k £305.
Has integrated graphics
vs xeon 1231 - better geekbench and passmark scores, more cores, can overclock more.
vs i7 6700k - more cores D:

Xeon 1231 £196.
No integrated graphics
6700k more powerful
vs i7 5820k - better clock speed, lower power consumption, better single core performance
vs i7 6700k, - nothing .. .price ?

So as you can see the i7 6700 bosses both of the cards, it is the second most expensive but for £100 more you get alot more performance, plus you won't have to get a dedicated graphics card, seeming as you havn't stated if you are getting one.

i7 5820k - defitnly no.
xeon 1231, if you are on a budget, but remember need a graphics card to view your pc on monitor 😉
i7 6700k, if no dedicated graphics get this, you can get a ddr3L board for i7 6700k if you really want, but rare to find 😉

I'm currently facing the same consideration, if it was about pure single thread performance then i7 4790k is the way to go... if you pay the premium of DDR4 then i5920k is so close in price to i6700k in therms of whole platform cost its hardly a good deal after all.
X99 + 5820k is really the way to go, more ram slots, more PCIEX lanes, more cores and even more cores considering further upgrades :)
If you feel lack of single core performance it still can be pushed above 4 GHz.

I completely disagree with your analysis jakegroves. two extra cores and two extra hypethreads trump the other lesser advantages of the 6700K for editing, rendering, and multitasking.

touche, but he will need a dedicated graphics card, and he didn't state what he wants to do about that so my presumption was no video card because of no gaming. As the 6700k multi-threading performance is pretty impressive.
But, if he really wants performance then go for the 5960x i guess.

Yeah consider the whole platform not only CPU... in 2-4 years on X99 you will still be able to get second hand Xeons or i7 5960X or maybe even some Broadwell-E? and you gonna still be in the game. I seriously doubt Skylake shrink will get anything new basing on last decade of Intel advancement, hence look at those people still running X79 mobos with some crazy Xeons inside.

Yes, I will be getting a gpu. I think a gpu like gtx 960/970 / r9 380/ 390 will be fine?
I did get confused when he said not to get i7 5820k, since it has 6 cores. It's a good cpu, but are faster single cores important?
I actually have never built a pc nor overclocked, so I should overklock if I would be getting a (k) cpu?
Also I feel like the xeon and i7 4790k would be the same, but only it has a integr gpu and being unlocked.
So the best choice would be from the best to worst: i7 5820k - xeon 1231 - i7 6700k - i7 4790k right?

From this comment I'm not just going to game otherwise I would have chosen the i5.
I assume that the OP will have a discrete GPU. I would not want to be gaming on any of these CPUs using the iGPU only (if thet have one)

For me it, it sounds like the purpose of his build was generally for video rendering etc i.e. home business computer, which a integrated GPU would be able to handle as no gaming, and just a CPU to do the business.
If you feel like by that comment he wants to game aswell, then that's why you got different reccomendation, but that's why i stated this has integrated GPU, thus not needing a dedicated GPU.

That small gaps will get bigger while you make use of that K letter standing next to the 5820... put both at 4.5Ghz and lets do those benchmarks again.
iGPU tests is a joke right? Any decent dGPU from last century will get higher scores.

Hey, since you have a xeon 1231, how is the performance of the cpu?
I might consider to get the 5820k

It's about the same as the i5 4590 it replaced, but does multi-threaded computation, like fluid dynamics, better.

Here's my changes to your list.

A better CPU cooler for your 140W CPU so you can overclock later (Overclocked it can approach 200W). I'm betting that you will want to do this when you get comfortable with the idea. You can gain at least 10% performance in rendering.

Quad channel memory as opposed to dual. (CL/CAS 15)

An appropriate, fast, GPU for you needs that also supports CUDA if your software can use it.

A cheaper, great, case to save some money. Cases are a personal choice. But it is one of the areas to save budget.

A more powerful PSU to allow for future expansion and a more powerful GPU as an upgrade, and to overclock your CPU later.

These are the games that the OP plans to play If I would be playing [games such as LOL, Mmo's, fifa]

That GPU will do the job, as to the CPU/GPU balance, this thread has discussed that pretty thoroughly.

Well I would be spending my time more on multitasking, editing, watching videos and rendering than gaming.
The gtx 960 is pretty decent for now, maybe I will get the gtx 970 I will think about it.

Also, DonkeyOatie
Isn't the cpu cooler kinda expensive? And why the 4x4 instead of 2x8 ram?

You have a lot to learn!!!!!!!!!
The 5820K is a clear winner, yes not on single core performance ONLY because of the higher clock speed
Those chips overclock to 4.2 very easy and the performance difference in rendering will be huge.
