In that price range, they should be legit. But do cheack anyway(if they mention ES, if it's inscribed on the lid, adn definitely no "intel confidential" stuff)

The Supermicro MBD-X10DAL-I-O should still be your best bet if you want a new MB.
am trying to put together a system for 3d rendering and overall 3d work so the more cores the better and so far i can find used cpus on ebay for good prices and the 2699 seems to be the best bet for price and amount of cores, its a beast!

Just be careful on eBay, many Xeon CPUs on there are ES which stands for Engineering Samples. Occasionally they work fine, but many times they do not. They are technically property of Intel and should not be sold. Many folks end up having issues with them.

Hmm, seeing as that Cpu was launched in january with a MSRP of 4k, i would be a little skeptical about those offers on ebay. they may be engineering samples or something, and that could prove troublesome, especially in a dual CPU config. I may be wrong here, though.

If you can see the front of the chip in the picture it clearly says ES on it if its an Engineering Sample. Usually the ad doesn't hide that fact as well

I must emphasize I don't care about your friend getting lucky with it DO NOT BUY THEM. Especially 2 of them, they could have come from different times in development and not work together at all. Even the ES processors cost enough that you will be stuck with 2 paperweights.

Refurbished are fine often they are takeoffs from decomissioned servers, however with a processor so new, I have serious doubts you will be finding refurbished ones cheap on ebay.

Used one is perfectly fine, Xeons are built to run forever, I just doubt very many will be out there so be careful you don't get stuck with an ES. The processor was just released in January, and the people who buy processors like that generally don't turn the systems over in 5 months.

Look at older generations. But, even with e5 v3, if the price is too good, the same concearns apply.
12 core v2's i'd say would be a safe bet, though,
