In that price range, they should be legit. But do cheack anyway(if they mention ES, if it's inscribed on the lid, adn definitely no "intel confidential" stuff)

The Supermicro MBD-X10DAL-I-O should still be your best bet if you want a new MB.
I really want to know what you're gonna end up buying, because I am in the same situation as you, trying to build a new workstation for the same use as you,
I am considering an ES version though, I read that if you can find a Stepping number closer to the retail version of the CPU that means it could be good, but then there is no guarantee, since it's an ES, the prices on Ebay are certainly interesting, but you just have to be careful with which one you're buying

Anybody owned an ES here ? what problems we might have with it running, other than we're not supposed to own them

As discussed here before, ES processors amount to stolen property from Intel, and as such its against forum guidelines to discuss their proper usage.

On a personal note, the damn things still go for $500 to $1000 I would hate to see you spend your money and end up screwed like MANY people have, and have 0 recourse.

Totally, that's what I want to hear, somebody's experience with these cpu's. I don't know if you owned one or not but I'd love to read about it more, just curious.

This is Intel's official word:

While I have not used them myself, I have supported folks on this forum who have had problems. Some examples, guy bought 2 to run in a dual processor setup and they do not POST at all together (but POST fine on their own), incompatible with memory it should be compatible with, crashes under heavy single core load, etc.

I see, for the dual cpu they have to match the stepping I think, a lot of people don't know that and buy different ones which won't work in a dual cpu config. but the memory crashes etc ... is certainly a problem.
