Supposedly, some X99 boards have M.2 slots directly connected to the CPU, although I don't happen to know of any such models. Those CPUs have enough PCIe 3.0 lanes (either 28x or 40x), especially for single-GPU configurations.

You are correct, the X99 boards do have more lanes to the CPU form PCI-E why they are preferred for SLI and Crossfire. You pay heavily for those lanes price wise though.

Edit: I forgot an "S"

Buy a full pci and skip m2. Most 200 sku on higher end have more than 16 now. I would not be surprised though to see your optane ready boards with dedicated direct lanes to their port (cannot find any info though and if so it probably ties up your last 4 direct lanes). If you want multi gpu you should buy x99 anyways. Anyone willing to pay for this drive in the enthusiasts class isn't playing with a i5 on a 200 series board. I am thinking more like high sku xeon on liquid nitrogen.

Um, I never thought I'd say this to anyone here, but maybe you should stick to the political threads, dude.

just kidding!
; )

Wow! Tom's has political threads?
