see, here it comes. the prices are getting where we need them to. stoked that in prolly another year or so this tech will be priced for all to enjoy. good news.

For $129.99, I can get the same read/write speeds in a RAID 0 array of two 500GB drives. The only difference is I get ~960GB more storage.

I don't really see this as being a good product for a notebook. Most people are going to need more than 40GB of space. It might work ok for a netbook though. It also might work well for enthusiasts that only want to boot windows and a few programs or games off this drive and use a secondary raid array for everything else.

Is this the same as Kingston's S125/G2 40GB SSD??? Can I use the Firmware update program from Intel to Kingston????

What about the x18-m?
80GB and $200.
If I remember correctly, it's G2.
1.8" drive would be a hell of a lot better for a netbook in the first place (if one of the goals of netbooks is light/slim).

Yea i don't see the point in spending 130$ for a measly 40Gb... I mean what can you do with 40Gb?? OS and maybe a game or two? No thanks, I have dual 640's in raid0.. the best 150$ I have spent in years....Not to mention that I have over a TB in space....

Yah... Still to steep for me too. I salivate at the thought of having a blazzing fast drive, but can't afford it.

I have a Kingston branded version of these in a typical netbook with Win7 and they make a huge difference in useability (grabbed it for

It could be used as a boot drive. It could be used in a netbook. For that matter my wife's laptop that is beyond a netbook probably doesn't have more than 30GB used on its hard drive.

Nevertheless we're still not there. It will be great when the 60GB class of drives gets close to $100 and the 128's are below $200. Lots of people could get by with 64 or 128 in a notebook, or even a desktop if the have alternate storage available. Even the high performance CAD workstation I'm using right now only has 57GB used on C:. Maybe they'll get there the second half of this year.

I'm putting together an i5-750 build with this SSD as the boot drive. The only reason I'm using it is because (build is for my friend) my friend demands an SSD boot drive. I was going to go with the OCZ drive that's a bit more expensive but faster, a lot of the reviews on newegg say there's a lot of fiddling to get it to work in a new build.

Last year in early 2009 bought a corsair 80 gb ssd for ~$180 cdn. Wow is it fast. I mean as a primary partition for your OS it's the way to go. However it's still not fast enough for some applications(ie compiling source code in very large software projects). For that I would recommend a ram drive and pick up at least 8gb with at least 3-4gb as a ramdrive. Actually I find myself the 3gb ramdrive is a bit too small and probably gonna expand to 10gb+ for a ramdrive. So maybe 24-32gb ram is the next goal.

Anyways going back to intel for $120 that's roughly the same speed as other SSD on the market a year ago so I'm not sure how competitive that really is. I think if your going to get a ramdrive SSD you may want to get a PCI expresss as your primary partition due to more bandwidth. Bandwidth is a huge problem and you want to really compare it on the market.

Cheers,

I'm still waiting for a super fast 80gig drive for under $100. I will use it as my app and boot drive and store all my data on my cheapo 1.5TB spinning drive.

can't type... 40gb at $129 is a value.... last I checked 1000gb for $99 was a better value, and it has a longer life span (maybe)

Longer Life span? I doubt it, i'll take a device with non moveing parts over moveing parts any day of the
week. No noise with SSD either and 4X faster............

[citation][nom]dark_lord69[/nom]$299.99 a "value" SSD?I'll pass.$129.99 for the one priced at 300 and you've sold me on one.[/citation]

Yeah I feel the same way. Prices are coming down which is a HUGE plus but right now they are still an enthusiast hardware. I am sorry but I can't justify the performance enhancement for $129 and 40GB. You could install an operating system and maybe a few games. I spent around $250 for my 3 x 640GB drives in RAID0 and to me the speeds are equivalent to the single SSD but I get way more space.

Can you even fit Windows 7 in 40 GB? I'm not so sure, my C drive is 70 GB and for the love of God I swear I installed all my apps on another partition...
