I had a "power failure" of sorts last night that may have damaged my Linux machine. I woke up to the chirping sound of the UPS that the DVR is plugged into. I was still a bit groggy and instinctively turned on the light. It came on, but was only about half as bright as usual. Seems there was SOME power coming in - enough to power light bulbs, but not enough to run anything with any substantial power draw.
Anyway, today my wired Linux machine is having sporadic success accessing the internet. I have a wireless router with 4 wired ports. My win7 "wired" machine is fine, as is my win7 laptop (wireless) and my wife's win7 laptop (also wireless). My smartphone can connect wirelessly. I plugged the cat5 from the Linux machine into my laptop and that works fine as a wired machine.
I have an EDIMAX wireless adapter and tried plugging it into the front USB port on the Linux machine. Same result. I can type in a URL and go there immediately, and hit refresh and it sits there "waiting for...". It may take 30 - 40 seconds to connect again, or it may not connect at all. I pinged several sites and get maybe 45% to 67% failure rate.
The ethernet jack is on the mobo. I thought about disabling the onboard card and buying a new card, but since even the wireless adapter doesn't work I'm wondering what's going on. Is it time to build another one? It's about 5 years old.
Thanks.
