Internal HDD works in old computer, clicks on startup with new computer

Hello,

I've recently upgraded to a new DIY computer based around an ASUS Z270-A motherboard. I plan on keeping my 1tb data hard drive (Samsung HD103SJ) while having a new SSD for Windows, programs, etc.

The 1tb drive continues to work in my old computer (a 9-year-old computer with an NVidia/Core2Quad mobo). But plugging it into my new computer - which is using the same power supply as the old one - causes the drive to spin up and then start clicking at regular intervals.

The new computer works fine otherwise. I didn't plug in this drive at first, and I've been able to load W10 and a few programs without issue.

I tried orient the drive vertically and horizontally: no difference.

What could cause this? What can I do to remedy this? How bad is the clicking sound if the drive works?

Start by backing up your data on the drive.

The trouble with diagnosing/trying to fix a drive that is clicking is that the stress of testing/attempting to fix it could be what kills it, so it's best to start with making sure any valuable data being stored on it is protected somewhere else before proceeding.

After that, you can try grabbing our free diagnostic software SeaTools to scan the drive for errors.

Thank you for the advice. It just seems strange that plugging it into one motherboard vs. another, while keeping the same power supply, should make such a difference... it appears to work fine with the old one.
