I have a fairly old netgear router and I'm having problems connecting to the router from down stairs. I keep on getting disconnections constantly. I am not very knowledgeable about routers and how they work. If I get a better router would it increase the "range" of the internet. If this is true can someone suggest a good router that is fairly cheapish.

Like Hlsgsz said, you can use a powerline range extender, hardwire in with a powerline adapter (non wireless), or if you want to get a new wireless router I would highly recommend getting one that is wireless AC and supports beam forming. You will want to make sure you have a wireless AC adapter though to go hand in hand with the new wireless AC router though.

The only wireless AC router I can recommend is the one I use, although I wouldn't consider it cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122786&cm_re=netgear_wireless_ac_router-_-33-122-786-_-Product

there are no guarantees as it depends on the materials of the house.
Something like this is a safer bet:
