Wondering if this is anything I can fix... I have been hitting great test benchmarks for internet download/upload/latency(ping) for my ISP (comcast Xfinity) BUT anytime I play a game my connection drops out from an online match and it boots me from games altogether as the connection times out or drops periodically.

I have their most premium internet package they offer (up to 1,000 mbs download), with their most premium router, plugged in through direct ethernet connection.

Something's obviously wrong here. Do I need to download drivers for this router? Is the router itself garbage? Is my ISP not being truthful about the speeds? Is there any solution other than going with another provider that is worth trying before giving up?

Are you gaming through a portal like Steam or GOG? It could be that you need to have a port (or ports) opened up for those apps. If your testing looks fine and your general download and upload speeds are fine everywhere else, I'd look at the gaming portal(s) as being your issue. This is assuming you are not getting a conflict with an antivirus/firewall program. Here's an example of Steam's port settings:
