[SOLVED] Internet speed dropped from 11MB/s and now fluctuates between 1MB/s and 3MB/s

Hello.

Recently, I got an upgrade from my old, decrepit desktop (seriously, decrepit. it used laptop ram). This is my first custom computer, so I ordered from pcspecialist as I could choose what the pc would contain yet was too worried to put it together myself. My internet was never good with my old pc, always cutting out every so often, and I attributed that to faults with the computer itself. When I got my new computer, on the 23rd November, my internet speed increased drastically and no longer cut out. In the last week or two, it has dropped again. Thankfully, it hasn't yet cut out, but knowing I could and should be having speeds up to 10x faster than I'm getting is really weighing on me. My computer is connected via powerline directly into my router. I have reset my IP, disabled the WiFi adapter, triple-checked my ethernet adapter supports the speeds I should/was getting and have consulted techy friends to still no avail.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: GeForce RTX 2060
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 GAMING X V2
PSU: Corsair CV550
SSD/HDD: 1TB SSD and1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2400MHz
OS: Windows 11

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

EDIT: I use Cloudfare WARP (started after my speeds dropped) and when I deactivate and close it, my download speed spikes for at most 5 seconds before dropping again.

Have you tried connecting an ethernet cable directly between the router and PC to see if performance improves/stabilizes? This seems to be a potential wireline adapter issue.

I haven't, mainly because my computer is upstairs, and the router is downstairs behind a large TV. I don't have a cable long enough to plug straight into the adapter. I think I found the issue though. Since you said it may be an issue with the adapter, I tried moving it into a different socket, and so far it is working well (well, better than before). If this changes, I'll update you. Thank you, however, if this was the fix.

Understood. Always good exercise (jk) to move stuff for an experiment. Do you have the option for a wireless connection? Sometimes that can be an improvement over powerline adapters as well.

Hah, the slow download speed wasn't enough of an issue for me to interrupt my parents and bring my setup downstairs for something that might not work, just knew I could be getting more. Also, I did test wireless, it was faster but only by 10mbps (which is quite a lot, but not where I wanted it to be/knew it could be).

If wireless was an improvement, direct ethernet would be even better, in most cases (assuming using modern hardware). Still, I understand your dilemma. Good luck.

Try turning off

1. Realtek® 8118 Gaming LAN Bandwidth Control Utility

if it's installed.


Also, go to https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550-Gaming-X-V2-rev-1x/support#support-dl-driver-lan and download and install the proper lan driver.

Also, do you happen to have a coaxial tv port in your computer room? If so, MOCA would give you gigabit ethernet speeds, so your powerline connection won't be the bottleneck.
