Internet speed slower with router

I recently upgraded to the Turbo plan for Time Warner. When I connect my PC directly to the modem I get 20mbps. But when I connect the modem to the router then the PC to the router (wired) I get under 3mbps. What is wrong with the router?

First thing to check is the specs for the router. Specifically, the WAN port, where you want at least a 100Mb/s port. Better is 1Gb/s.

I fixed the problem. I changed the bandwidth to "20mhz" from "20/40mhz".
