Internet Throttled HARD when downloading?

So recently since about 2-3 weeks ago, whenever I've started downloading anything off of Steam, my internet slows down to a crawl on Wired/wireless. Once I've begun the download I can't even load webpages on my desktop, I just get "cannot connect to DNS". My DL speeds on Steam also have been cut in half.

I'm not sure where to begin to address this issue.

I've had my router for about 2 years and the firmwares up to date as well.
Modem: SB6183
Router: ASUS RT-AC66R 802.11ac

Again set it to something you know will not max it out and test to see if it has any impact on browsing. If it does then you can suspect some issue with the machine but if it does not then for some reason you are not getting the bandwidth you used to.

There is little you can do since the ISP always uses the "UP TO" in their statements. You could call the ISP but as long as it work they will claim there is nothing they can do.

Speeds seem to be reflected correctly. Speed tests show 80-120Mb/s while Steam is getting 12MB/s

But this didn't use to happen before. I would easily have 16+MB/s on steam and be able to browse Reddit/YouTube/Twitter while downloading just fine. But I can't load jack shit anymore once I begin a DL.

I suspect you are using a cable modem which means you share bandwidth with all your neighbors. This means the actual throughput you get will not be the same from day to day

12MBYTE is 96mbits. So that implies you are using 100% of your bandwidth. 16MB is 128mbits.

Just set steam to use say 9MBS and you should be fine.

But I was easily pulling 16+MB/s on steam and able to browse online while downloading with no problem before.
