Proof, if proof were needed: I haven't played HL2 for 2 months, but I just fired
it up, and offline mode still works fine, no patches demanded.

Yes. Installed Steam, Bought HL2 via web and have had NO problems with it.
I also have a cable modem so I can't complain about large downloads. To
those on Dial-up, they have a reasonable dispute. They should be able to
play without downloading updates. However, I recall that pre-steam, I played
CS and still had to download huge updates as once and update came out since
many servers updated and my older version would not connect. Granted, this
only applies to the multiplayer aspect of the game but the latest version of
CS along with HL2 is why I bought the game in the first place.

I can only compare HL2 with BF1942 and TC's Raven Shield/Athena Sword (the
other FP shooters I have played.)
