Hello, recently I updated my iPhone 5 (GSM) to iOS 10, and now it's requesting that I install a sim card to continue setup. The problem is, I've always used the device like an iPod and I've never has a sim installed. Is there any way I could downgrade to iOS 9 maybe? I have access to a Windows PC with up-to-date iTunes.     Thanks.

You would need to download the image from somewhere, Apple doesn't really like downgrading though admittedly it's been awhile since I've done this. You can however use any SIM card (same carrier of course, unless unlocked)..it does not need to be active, so if you or a friend have an old one laying around install it and it should let you proceed with setup.

Yeah, I thought that it might be as easy as downloading an image but apple seems to have stopped signing signatures for older iOS versions so you can't restore them through iTunes anymore. Maybe there's some 3rd party app that doesn't check signatures? And I don't actually know anyone with the same carrier - Bell Canada.

I'm also with Bell, The Source sold me an unactivated SIM for $5 (she was gonna give me an old one for free if they'd had one) so I could do the same thing on an old iphone, I needed it to interface with a GPS transceiver via Bluetooth. Maybe shop around and see?
