Is 550w ok for the R9 390?

Hi there,

I'm building a pc but am not sure if 550w would be ok for this build.

Specs:
Processor: AMD FX-8350
Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming
CPU Fan: Cryorig H7
RAM: Crucial ballistix 8GB kit
Graphics card: MSI R9 390

Would a 550w PSU be ok or would I need a 600w?

Solution

Hi - Actually a good quality 550w unit will have more than enough +12v amps to run that build.
A sys with an R9 390 requires 30 +12v amps, better quality 550's have ~45 +12v amps.

With that said, I personally would opt for a good 650w unit. You have a 125w TDP CPU and would
probably be running a 550 in the 80% or more(if you OC) range of it's max while gaming. A good
650 would run in the sweet spot(40-70%) of it's efficiency range and would also be running cooler and quieter as a result.

If you already own a good quality 550w unit, no need to change. If you haven't purch yet, I
suggest a good 650w unit, several of which are linked above.

Get a quality 650-750watt psu, that 550watt is right on the brink of what the system would pull, so you definitely want to go higher to be safe.

Also just a thought, if you're planning on doing overclocking, get a motherboard with a 990fx chipset, Such as the gigabyte 990fx ud3.
As the 970 gaming features a 6+2 powerphase, and the gigabyte ud3 features a safer 8+2 with better heat dissapation, for about the same price.

Is this good enough quality?

I would personally go with an XFX 650W or a Seasonic 620W power supply!

Modular or non-modular?

Yes!
Has 44 +12v amps, your sys requires 30-31 +12v amps. You are good to go.

If you can afford modular that is preferable (better air flow with fewer cables inside the case)

If I did need to get more wattage, would this be ok for an upgrade or should I get something else?

Thank you. This has definitely saved me from making a mistake in the future :)

No - stay with your original XFX 550, the Rosewill has some good PSU's, but the photon series
is not amongst them.
