Is 802.11g needed at home?

Well, I tried to find a thread like this. Anyway, I'm currently using a D-Link DI-614+ 4-port wireless router to connect to PC's by wire to a DSL modem. I use a DWL-520 PCI card in my daughter's PC when she's home. Should I bother to upgrade to a 802.11g setup? The distance between the router and the card is about 20 meeter and goes through a floor and a couple walls.

Nobody can answer that question for you here. I assume by this "The distance between the router and the card is about 20 meeter and goes through a floor and a couple walls" you for some reason think upgrading will help you coverage or something? The only reason you would upgrade is if you needed the bandwidth advantage has over .11b. Range may very well be better but it would be because the radio is better, the antennas etc... not because it is .11g. That has nothing to do with coverage and for the home user has only to do with what you need as it relates to either more throughput (for local file sharing) or perhaps the added security contemporary .11g gear offers . WPA vs. WEP for instance.

yeah, If everything is working fine the way it is then just leave it and save the money. There is another new wireless standard comin out soon "i" i think, and then you'll ask yourself yet again if you want to switch.

if it runs fine just leave it for now, i only worked with linksys wireless products and those all seem to be great whether it's "b" "g"

.11i is a security subset. It wll be a firmware upgrade on most devices that already support WPA.

.11n will be a year or so before you seen any Wi-Fi certified gear.

Yup if I rember corrclty "i" encorporates WPA 2 using AES 128bit encryption among other things

ahhhh that's what i was thinkin about... Isn't there some new Encryption comin out? like 512 or something for home use...

I know there's HIGH encryption levels on Stand Alone Hardwares.. But on the newer wireless routers isn't there a new level of Encryption higher then 128 comin out?
