Is 8GB ram still ok for gaming?

Solution
Running dual-channel memory is recommended for optimal performance, so you'll need to use the same size sticks. Either get another 4GB, or get 2x 8GB. Another 4gb would be best bang for buck I'd say. But you say years to come, so it's up to you and your preferred budget.

*Though getting an 8GB stick now and using it with the 4GB would be fine, especially if you plan on replacing the 4GB with another 8GB in future. Might be the best way to go if you don't want to drop $70+ on 16GB now. RAM is rather expensive right now I believe.

Depends on what you trying to do. If you are trying to go all out, then I would recommend 16Gb. But something like low-med settings should be ok. Again, to give your self some room, I would get an 8GBx2 kit for around $60-70 if you can and just have that piece of mind

I don't know either haha maybe I just dont wan't what I type in the thread go to waste :pt1cable:

MERGED QUESTION
Question from Trave : "4GB x 8GB or 4GB x 4GB ram?"

That's what I meant to say. I forget, there are some new games actually recommending 16GB. Can't think of those on the top of my head right now....

just want to play games with my gtx 1060/1050ti, i3 6100 and 1440x900p display comfortably in years to come

Solution
Again, to future proof yourself, I would really recommend a 8GBx2 set or another 4GBx2 set since you already have a dual set. Also because you want the high settings. Imagine if you are playing on Hard then that means more AI which means more CPU power. Again, to future proof yourself, and for years to come, 16GB is that sweet spot.

This is true. I was able to pick up a G. Skillz 8GBx2 DDR4 set for $55. I thought that was pretty good. Also take into account Black Friday is right around the corner, you may pick up a set for $30-40.

So from what I read in other threads I need the same "MEMORY SIZE", brand and frequency to enable dual channel.
Does having a dual channel really a must for playing games?is the difference noticeable?

really planning to get an 8GB stick tomorrow but this dual channel really makes me think getting a 4GB.

I guess i'll just go with the 4GB maybe will get me by till the end of next year then resell the two 4GB sticks and buy an 8gb x 8gb or whatever size is the recommended by that time instead of wasting money and time on 8GB ram that I wouldn't know if will work well with my existing ram.

Thanks

thanks for the info :)
