Hello.

I’ve had my PC since 2016, with a Core i7 6700K processor. The only upgrades I’ve made since then are storage and the GPU , I upgraded from a 980Ti to a 3090 (you can imagine the bottleneck). I play in 4K on a PG27UQ monitor with a max refresh rate of 98Hz.

Long story short, I feel it’s time to upgrade, especially since my cooler has started making weird noises. I recently ordered a 9800X3D processor for 600$ (Including Tax and shipping to my country).

Is this CPU (and its core count) sufficient for someone who doesn’t just game but also works on architectural software like Autodesk and design programs like Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator? I’d like to be able to render projects, browse the internet, and watch videos simultaneously without any lag. Or should I sell it and go for the 7950X3D (even though I couldn’t find it for a reasonable price) or a 9900X (without box ) for 415$ ?

The X3D cache helps with gaming, yes but if you're looking at a purely workstation build, you should look at a higher pedigree non X3D SKU. If you're going to be gaming with the system when you're not engaged with productivity software, then yes you should go with the X3D SKU's, namely the 9800X3D.

X870/B850 chipsets are right up your alley to pair with the 9800X3D.

Where are you located?

What about the remaining components? Specifically, rams, cooler, case, PSU, and fans? I want everything to be RGB-free, and the case should support 3 HDDs and 1 sata ssd but not be too large. I currently have a Corsair 760T, but I don’t think it’s optimal in terms of airflow or size.

4k gaming performance is nearly 100% graphics limited even with a 4090/5090 and that means that you can use a non-X3D CPU and get literally 99% of the performance on the 9800X3D. This means that a 9900x, 9950x, 7950x would be much better for your use case while costing similarly to the 9800X3D. Just to be clear, this is limited to 4k gaming and above. If you drop down to 1440p gaming and below, the performance differential between the X3D CPUs and the non-X3D CPUs widens significantly. At 1080p the X3D CPUs can be up to 40% faster than non-X3D games. At 1440p X3D CPUs can be up to 15-25% at the high end depending on the game.at 4k its 1-2% at most advantage to the X3Ds.

I might keep the 9800x3d or sell it if I found a buyer , When it comes the motherboards I'm familiar with what chipsets are used but my knowledge is limited when it comes to vrm , pcie lanes bandwith reduction and usb 4 importance . I live in Saudi Arabia (and no i'm not wealthy XD) and my budget is not that much. Thank u and I'll update the thread.

Yeah for me I only play in 4k even in shooters so as I said eariler if I found a buyer in my city I might sell it and get 9900x for 250 dollars less.

5090 reviews are showing cases of a CPU bottleneck, even at 4k, with a 9800x3d.

A 3090 wouldn't experience this, obviously, unless said title is heavily CPU dependent. I expect the 6090 will see CPU bottlenecks even more so, with a 9800x3d. Thankfully AM5 has some life left for faster drop in upgrades.
So this would mean that getting a 9800x3d would be better than getting 9900x If I wanted to get 6090 in the future , or am I mesunderstanding things ?

According to TPU with a 4090 there is very little difference at 4k ultra unless you have a 2-3 generation old CPU even before the 9800X3D came out.

Here is the same testing done with a 9800X3D included at 4k ultra with a 4090:

I was strictly speaking about the 5090 itself. The OP is looking to hold out till a 6090. The 9800x3d is probably going to hold back a 6090 in even more titles, even at 4k, if a 5090 is already starting to show signs of it. For the OP's current setup, a 9900x or 9800x3d will matter little, unless maybe they are playing something very cpu dependent like WoW.

You're absulotly right that cpu will matter little but since I don't update my setup so frequnly I always aim for the best and my current cpu is lacking now when it comes to designing in adobes and general usage and surfing the system that it's starting to get into my nerves. Would it be better to update my thread to ask for an Am5 Setup recommendation or should I make a new thread ? . Thanks

Ahh, I see, though its really hard to speculate CPU bottlenecks until a peer CPU to the 9800X3D comes out. I am sure TPU is going to do another article with the 5090 and CPU scaling with current CPUs which can help determine this, but even that won't be conclusive until a 10800X3D/Intel come out from under its rock with a CPU release.

How much is a 9950x, 7950x, and 9900x where you live? If the 9800X3D can be resold for the same price as a 16 core, it may be worth if for your production tasks.
