is a digital optical cable instead of green, yellow and black?

Hi i've got digital optical cable on my speaker pod and spdif on my motherboard i take it they are the same?
If they are will one of these cables replace the green, yellow and black cables and will it sound better?
I have logitech z5400 speakers and asus z87 pro with alc1150 sound.

Yes it will. Though optic cables are rarely used, they can give you better audio experience than regular BGY jacks.

Digital optical is usally a fiber optic cable called Toslink. SPDIF is a RCA based socket in which RAW or PCM audio is transfer. They are not the same. Look at the socket.s

The sockets look exactly the same and so do the cables that's why i made the assumption! And since posting that i've read a number of tech blogs that say they are the same just one is the name of the technology the other the object! I googled it. "TosLink SPDIF Digital Optical Cable" i found that for sale and many others the same!
