I plan to purchase an entirely new cpu soon, with a new mobo and ram, and I was wondering whether my current cooler, the hyper 212, would be fine for an i5 8600k with intentions of doing some overclocking, thanks.

Yes it'll do just fine for stock speeds or mild overclocking. I got the hyper 212x to go with my coffee lake.

The 8000 series does run hot but it should allow for a minor oc.
I would look to the deepcool Gammax 400, it has replaced the 212 as the darling of the budget coolers.

"Verdict
By a wide margin, Deepcool's Gammaxx 400 has the best performance-to-price ratio of any cooler I've recently tested. It will remain on the top of my purchase list until something with even greater value comes along to replace it."

NO WAY. The Gammaxx 400 has a janky pushpin mounting and a loud fan. The Hyper 212 evo is way better. There's a reason is outsells every other cooler EVER. At the price, it's unbeatable.
If you're going big OC, go with the Noctua NH-D15. It beats most water cooling, it's silent, and can't leak. Just be careful of RAM clearance with it.
