Is A SATA 3Gb/s Platform Still Worth Upgrading With An SSD?

It's a pity that this test didn't test the hard drives that are more commonly used in business and standard quality home grade desktops and laptops.

I refurbished a pile of HP DC7800's in my business by adding ssd's (Intel 520's in the case), 4 gigs of RAM and Windows 7. They were much much faster after the upgrade. I have bought new HP 8200's recently as a CTO build with i5 processors, 120 gig ssd and 8 gigs of ram, and to be honest in most situations there is little apparent difference in the performance compared to the brand new units.

I have been installing Samsung 840 pro SSD's into 3-4 year old laptops, just using Symantec Ghost to directly copy the image across. The speed of of Samsungs compared to the crappy 4200 rpm laptop drives is phenomenal.

I really don't care how fast a Velociraptor drive works on a 6 gig sata port compared to a Samsung 840. No business computer would ever have one of these installed. The real world tests I need is the speed on one of these Samsung SSD's compared to a 5400 rpm desktop drive or 4200 rpm laptop hard drive. This is what I need to be able to show the management of small to medium businesses.
 


^This. Not very many people have raptors in their system. Comparisons to more typical HDD setups would be very helpful.
 


I do have the 120GB Intel SSD 320 so my next step up would be to the 6GB/s 240-256 GB SSD.
On an aside, my wife has a Dell laptop that I replaced the 80GB drive with a 64 GB SSD, and it made a huge difference, even though it had reduced capacity.
