I'm wanting to get into VR and playing at max graphics as well as flight sims. Games like CoD Black ops, PUBG, Overwatch, etc. I know at the very least, i'll need to go from 8 to 16 gb RAM. Likely to some DR3 2133 MHz. I'm wondering if this rig is nearing the end of its life as a gaming PC though. There's always going to be faster, but I don't want the latest and greatest. I want just enough to have the best experience. The goal is to upgrade only what absolutely must be.

RAM is not as significant to VR as VRAM. And you already have plenty of that in your GPU. The only weak point in your setup is your CPU holding back the GPU, not too much though. And if you wanna bring that on par, you will need a total platform(CPU + Motherboard + RAM) change.
I would say, give VR a try and then take the decision if it does not play out well.

I would say unless you're getting the latest version of the Rift, you're better off getting the HTC Vive setup instead.
Unless you're getting the Rift used for a steal then by all means, get that and save some money.

Haven't read the latest on the new Vive. What would make you chose that over the Rift? I've been reading there's more support for Rift and more options.

Gameplay experience depends upon what you comprehend as standard. For eg. if i dont have the budget, i will consider the minimum as standard for me. In those terms your setup is adequate. But if you want the best experience, you will need a total platform(cpu+mobo+ram) upgrade.
