is an i3 7100 and a gtx 1050 ti an alright cpu+gpu combo for gaming?

Any chance you can return it? The G5400 is pretty much identical performance wise and the cost of a budget MB paired with it is almost the same price as the 7100 alone.

As for gaming that pair would game well with at least 8gb of RAM at 1080P/60hz.

That's fine then if you have it and can't return it. The G5400 is better because it's cheaper and has the 300 series motherboard upgradeable to a 6-core i7 instead of the 4-core i7 on the 200 series motherboard the i7-7100 runs on.
