Question Is CPU bottleneck the cause of my system crashes ?

Hey everyone.

2 months ago I upgraded my VC and RAM. Everything was fine for about a month, no issues. Then I had the first BSOD. I checked some system files, they got repaired, all fine again. Now a week ago I had a crash again. Then another and another. I did some hardware tests for the RAM, nothing. Checked if my PSU was sufficient, it is. Then I was kinda lost and wrote the support of the webshop I always got my parts from. Showed them the crash reports in Blue Screen Viewer and they said that my CPU is probably the culprit but they can't tell me to replace/check my current one because of company policy and told me to ask in a forum.
I mean I probably should upgrade the CPU anyway but is this really the cause for all the crashes? I don't have any PC shops that can help me nearby

My specs are:
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
G.Skill Aegis 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory (Before: 16GB (2x8192MB) HyperX Predator DDR4-3200 CL16)
MSI VENTUS 3X OC GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB Video Card (Before: KFA2 GeForce RTX 2070 Super EX)

The crashes referred to:
  • dxgmms2.sys
  • afd.sys
  • ntoskrnl.exe
  • dxgkrnl.sys

Thanks in advance

What is the make and model of your power supply unit please?

Be Quiet makes a number of different 600W PSUs. Which model is yours?
The PSU is unfortunately the only one I have not written down. It's the only older part that I have still in use. If I had to guess it would be the Power 8. I'll get back to you when I can check in an hour

It could be the CPU. You may try a DDU driver uninstall before jumping to a new CPU just in case it's not the CPU at fault.

Assume all your chipset drivers and Bios are up to date?
Truthfully, I've never heard about chipset drivers. How can I find the right one? What do I have to look for?
I'll try the DDU uninstall
If nothing helps, would the Ryzen 7 5800X be a good upgrade? It would be in the price range I'd not mind

Thanks for helping

Your reason for suspecting the CPU is at fault is someone working support at a webshop? It is usually the last thing I would consider at fault as they don't tend to fail very often. The Pure Power 8 is an old budget PSU. I wouldn't recommend using it to power a £600 graphics card even when new.

So you'd recommend a new PSU instead?

I would recommend a good quality one like a Corsair rmx or similar. However, I don't think that is the cause of your BSOD. Maybe the bios update will solve it. . Do you still have your old memory?
In fact I do. I did a memory check but everything was fine. I can ofc swap back if you think that could be the issue

I would swap the ram back just to see
I did, same result. So I tried with a new CPU. Runs smooth but I checked the temp ofc. Waaay too high. Idling at 80°C
Is it possible that I bricked my old CPU because of not enough cooling due to my GPU and Ram demanding much more now?

No, CPU's don't get bricked from Ram speed or GPU's. What CPU cooler do you have on there?
A small AMD wraith one. I scraped the paste off, applied it new and now it's idling (Chrome YT) at between 45 and 60 with some minor spikes at 70°C
I still have a bequiet Dark rock 4 with me but I don't trust myself installing that one truthfully

I'm surprised the CPU was to blame, it is usually the last thing I would consider at fault but I guess some do fail.
I wouldn't worry about those temperatures. The AMD Wraith is fine to use it's just your Dark Rock 4 would be quieter.

While the idling is now cooler, temps go up to 92C for low effort games. Doubt that's an okay temperature
