Is free Windows 10 upgrade still available

I am going to be running my os on a new ssd and so I need to reinstall Windows. Originally I had the free upgrade right after I bought my PC but I understand that offer ended in 2016. I have a valid copy of Windows 8.1 and I’ve heard from various sources online that there are work arounds to get the upgrade, but they are all from about 8 months ago now. So are there any still working workarounds and if so what are they?

If you're just reinstalling on a new drive in the same system, you don't need the license key, or your old 8.1.

If you're moving this to new hardware (motherboard), you still won't need the license key or your old Win 8.1.

No funny workarounds needed.
For a reinstall, just install it on that drive.
Disconnect all other drives, and How to do a CLEAN installation of Windows 10

It will activate itself when it goes online later.

And in neither case is a cheap grey market key from fleabay a good idea.

Buying of ebay or fleabay as you call it does not make it illegal or grey in anyway provided you buy from the right seller who is authorised...Ebay have a complete section on this:

When people are paid to post something online, "fully authorized" is in question.


And from ebay...if it includes a valid COA and the physical media, as required by MS...sure. No problem.
If they just email you a license key, as is usual...problem.

Agree but the point being, that you can buy from ebay with a great discount and still have a fully authorised and legal copy of Windows...

if you have a "I have a valid copy of Windows 8.1"
you can upgrade top windows 10 by installing windows 10 clean install and using your windows 8.1 serial number when prompted for a serial number in windows 10. that is all that is needed to be done. fresh install. ( I have done this 2 months ago it does work)

Just tried this solution today and it worked! Thank you for your help, you just saved me $150
