Hi All, I tried searching for an answer to this but I only saw a post from 2008 and thought I should probably get more updated opinions.

Is GEIL ram any good? It seems to be consistently cheaper than most other brands and I'm not sure if this is because it is subpar or because it has to undercut in order to make a name for itself.

How important are RAM timings and such, CAS? If I was going for 3000 Mhz, does it matter if my CAS is 16, 15 or 14?

I honestly don't know if I'm going Ryzen 7 1700 or Intel i5-8600k so idk if that plays a factor in your comments.I know I should check my RAM vs the mobo QVL list.

Thanks in advance.

Technically you can drop just about any ram in your motherboard so long as it conforms to the slot but the QVL is a way for users to purchase the brand used in their tests without worry/doubt. The QVL is a way of telling folks, that we've worked with them and they don't throw hiccups no matter what.

Per the frequency question, you should aim for no less than DDR4-3200MHz kits regardless of Intel's Coffeelake platform or AMD's Ryzen platform. To add, look for CAS 16 kits, they are abundant only the bells and whistles such as LED and aesthetics tend to increase the prices by a bit.

Regarding Geil as a brand...it's kind of a toss up. Some like them, some don't and they don't have a stringent QC as other makers do.

I really appreciate this response. I will avoid GEIL just to be safe unless I see it on a QVL. In fact,I'll stick to QVL listed RAMs for sure.
