Is hyper threading useful in gaming

Looking into getting a gaming pc. I've already decided to use the r9 290x and wondering if getting an intel i7 or xeon is worth the extra for hyper threading. Mainly looking to play bf4 multiplayer. Could anyone provide benchmarks to prove one way or the other. I've found conflicting benchmarks and am really confused now. Thanks in advance!

No, it adds near nothing. The best CPU for BF4 is AMD FX. I would get the FX-8350, or if intel, the i5-4670k. Hope this helps.

Ok do you have any benchmarks to back that up? I prefer intel CPUs mainly because I don't like the motherboards that you have to choose from AMD. But 8350 is a beast!

Certainly isn't worth it if you are only gonna game on it. Only a handful of games actually benefit with HT, others will lose performance and others will get you the same result with or without HT. So yeah, FX or i5.

There are no benchmarks yet out for BF4 so I can't give you anything. For BF3, the FX was a bit ahead of the i5.

Hyper-threaded cores are not real. It is nothing more than an intelligent scheduler. It's like eating with 2 hands. (Your hands being the Hyper-Threaded cores) Just because your eating with 2 hands, doesn't mean your mouth can take more food. It simply saves the time of you having to reach back down and grab another piece of food as it will already be ready to go. As for gaming, your better of buying the FX-8350 for Battlefield 4. Although the Intel would get you 60+ FPS, not to mention the PCP(Per Core Performance) is better on Intel so games that don't utilize 8 cores will run better down the road. No sense in buying an i7 (Not to mention the totally ridiculous Xeon) for just games.
