Is it a bad idea to buy a cpu off ebay?

Solution

That's just the starting bid. What I bought that was a scam had only the standard web image of the box and the seller had no history.

If they have pictures of the actual item, it's usually legit.
Results for used parts can vary. I have bought 3 CPU's from eBay, used and all 3 have been rock solid. I'm even running one overclocked and it's been good well over a year now. If you are looking to do this as an upgrade, just do your research and make sure your motherboard is compatible and make sure you have the correct BIOS version needed.

If you are buying new, just make sure it's from a seller with a lot of feedback and close to 100%. For used, look for the same plus a guarantee against DOA parts in case return is needed.

I've had good experience buying processors on Ebay. Except a ridiculously low priced *"NEW"i5-4690K that was too good to pass up. Turns out I didn't look at the seller history before I bought it. It was a scam and there was no processor. Ebay refunded my money though.

I am assuming stuff like this i5 2400 is a scam right? theres no way someone is selling this cpu for 10 dollars http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Core-i5-2400-3-1GHz-Quad-Core-Processor-Read-Full-Ad-/262789832460?hash=item3d2f7e9f0c:g:A9YAAOSw4GVYUgqf

item is protected under Ebay money back insurance: http://pages.ebay.ca/ebay-money-back-guarantee/

I once bought a new SSD and the a seller deactivated his account and vanished. ebay refunded me in 14 days. zero hassle.
