[SOLVED] Is it a good idea to reuse this PSU?

Hi,

I'm about to upgrade my PC, but I heard some people say that reusing an old PSU is a bad thing and could possibly harm your components.

My current PSU is a Cooler Master V1000 (80 PLUS Gold) that I bought on 23 April 2015.

Is it a good idea to reuse this PSU or is it better to buy a new one?

It had a 5 year warranty. You are just outside the warranty. It isn't "that old" yet, IMO.

That unit seems to have a good reputation, however, it is past its 5-year warranty.

And most likely one of the new GPUs coming out soon (possibly a high end card like 3070-3080)

As the unit passed it warranty point in April I would say no.
do not risk fancy new parts with a power supply the makers (used loosely here) will not stand behind anymore.
Coolermaster is not the greatest PSU reseller out there even this unit itself is made by seasonic I do not suggest any PSU outside if its warranty period.

if the unit were a seasonic focus gold unit with a 10-12 year warranty I would say re-use till warranty goes, the warranty is gone on that one.

Unfortunately, Covid19 has driven PSU prices sky-high, but this is a very good unit.

Yeah it's a bit expensive but guess it's still better to pay more than risking to break other parts

the seasonic focus gold has a 10 year warranty, the focus prime has a 12 year warranty
the corsair TXM has a 7 year warranty, the RMX mentioned by NightHawkRMX has a decade warranty. the EVGA supernova G2/G3 PSUs above 750 watt have a decade warranty.
