I think I used to have it as 'selective startup'. I reinstalled Windows 10 (keeping all apps and documents) and I think it reverted back to 'normal startup'...but I am not sure on that, maybe Microsoft technician changed it.

My disk usage has been staying idle/fluctuating at 100% for some reason (now its low and normal) so I was thinking of changing the 'startup', but not sure what one to do. Do I choose normal or selective? and if selective is better, what services do I choose?

System configuration should be set to "Normal Startup" - this is the default configuration.

"Selective Startup" is only used to troubleshoot problems, after which you set it back to "Normal Startup".

"Selective Startup" is not intended to be used permanently, so asking "which one should I use?" in this context does not apply.

You have merely misunderstood what "Selective Startup" is used for - - it's not an option, just a troubleshooting tool.

I would leave startup as normal as you only really need to use selective if you want to stop something from loading. If you fresh installed recently, the things you might have been trying to avoid before may not exist now. Start up would have reverted to normal on a reinstall as its the default setting.

If its a start up program you want to stop, you far better off using the start up tab in task manager to disable it than mess around with services in msconfig. MUch safer.

If you only recently did the reinstall, windows will be in a process of getting to know your usage. It also needs to make sure you have latest apps and updates, etc. So after a while it should revert to no activity on hdd. IN idle times it also runs maintenance like defrags or building its index for search.
