Is it normal for my CPU Temp to reach up to 60c just by running a game installer?

Hi Guys,

I already made another post commenting about my CPU fan noise and temps.

I have:

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA

CPU: AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7790 OC 1GB DDR5


The problem is that yesterday while installing LA NOIRE my CPU temps reached 60c-62c just by running the game installer, not the game, is this normal?

While playing the game after 1 hour my maximum temp reached 70c and of course the fan was running like a jet engine and that's when I quit the game afraid I could damage the processor.

My concern is... why playing a regular game like this bring temps this high? is not like I'm running Crysys 3 or Far Cry 3 which is understandable.

Any suggestions? do I need to change something to the BIOS? a CPU update? or just better cooling?

Sounds like better cooling.
This is the stock amd cooler correct? If so, mine reached 62 under gaming on a 965, so I would highly recommend replacing it. My 212 EVO dropped my temps 35C.
212 EVO and a good thermal paste would do great.

Yes, I'm running the stock amd cooler. I'm waiting on my 212 EVO.

But do you think is normal for CPU temps go this high just by running the game installer and a game that is not very "demanding"?

Even running AVS video editor jump my temps up to 60c...

That definitely sounds to be high for something that isn't overly taxing on the CPU. As already stated an aftermarket cooler and properly installed thermal paste will make a difference. Also, how is your case and the airflow? Do you have sufficient fans that are properly place for maximizing airflow to keep the inside cool? What about proper cable management to maximize airflow? Also, and this is probably something you've already verified but what temperature are you using? I've seen a lot of people refer to the socket temperature rather than the CPU temperature.

I have heard of those kinds of temps with things like that, mostly due to thermalpaste over use, and poor airflow.

Here is a picture of my Cooler master elite 431 case with just 1 fan on the front. I'm using the six temps readings from Core Temp shown on my taskbar.

Adding more fans would help. I have a 430 elite, and I feel you need at least 2 fans. I have two intake and 2 exhaust. Bottom and front intake, rear top ex.

I'm going to add one 120mm to the back, should I add another one to the top of the case?

Your cable management isn't the problem but looking at your setup I think airflow within the case is. It appears that you have one fan pulling in air and only venting going out. I would consider adding a second fan at the bottom of the case to bring in air (just make sure there is sufficient room for air to flow underneath the case), then add a third to the top of your case to extract the air. For the back of the case place a fan back there if you plan to stick with the stock CPU cooler or go with a 212. If you decide to go with a liquid cooled CPU cooler then your fan and radiator would go there.

I will add the 212 EVO + another fan in the back slot and check the temperature change...
