[SOLVED] Is it possible to assign a static ip address in an RJ11 interface of modems or modem-routers?

Solution

Thats a negative captain you would need a DSLAM.

You can with SDSL modems I believe or if you were after the distance over a telephone line you could use VDSL/Ethernet boxes.

That is done on the ISP side, i am talking about having a modem or modem router and configure it as static on your side, not the ISP's, because if that is so, then people who have knowledge about this could just assign themselves a static IP on their side while paying nothing extra unlike buying a static IP from the ISP's.

Sorry your dream cannot come true.

The RJ11 is on the WAN side, you have no control of what happens on the WAN side, that's controlled by the ISP.

But just for a moment assume you can, the situation is not unlike you LAN side, your admin is using DHCP, it has a pool of addresses to lease and assumes everything in that subnet is using dynamic IP addressing, and one day you come in and decides to make your own IP static. One thing that can happen is, another person on that subnet will get your IP via DHCP and you come in with the same IP. Two same IP on the same subnet CRASH! It may work for a little while.

Next idea.

oh no no, i know that his cannot be done, but i was told by a friend that he was able to connect 2 modem routers via rj11 and have their respective end devices ping each other which last time i checked was impossible, which is why i asked the community to double check as this might be a knowledge that i am unaware of :) guess he was just lying and trying to show off

You are asking us to approve or disapprove what your friends has done? That's like Bill Clinton asking, define what the word IS, is. All we can say is, normally no. Can you EVER to it, works for a while, for a special purpose? maybe. So if you just wanna do this so you can ping each other all day, go ahead. To bypass paying ISP for a static, No.

just trying to disprove someone who gives out false information, he asked me if it can be done, i said no, then the next day he said he was able to do it, we cant afford to have false information passed around now can we?

he said he did it connecting 2 home modem routers via rj11, he was able to assign static ip's for each, well, according to him though

If they are ADSL I'd call it out as complete BS.

my thoughts exactly hahaha its a personal/home account, non-ADSL services here cost a lot or doesnt exist from where i am :/ thanks for clearing that up bro, the guy was just showing off i guess :|
