you can get 144hz with Dual Link DVI but xbox one doesnt support DVI to DVI doesnt have the input...woould a converter work hdmi to dvi? or am i stuck? surely HDMI can give 120hz? or is my monitor old or somthing?

The XBox One is locked at 60Hz max. You can get an adapter, possibly, and use the monitor's DVI connector, but you won't get a faster speed out of it. (so why not stick with HDMI?) It's all because a TV was and is the monitor of choice for game systems: Microsoft designed it that way.

It doesn't matter, if the signal source can't go that high. It takes the GPU to be able to put out a 120Hz refresh AND the monitor to support the 120Hz refresh in order to have 120Hz refresh, otherwise it works at the fastest speed that the specific hardware can use. In this case, 30Hz or 60Hz, depending on the game.

The converter will need to support the desired speed and convert the frame rate to it. Otherwise its just a waste of money. You can't find an inexpensive one that will do that... and those that can do some kind of frame rate conversion start around $300 USD and more. Furthermore, I haven't seen one on the market that went past 60hz (60 FPS).

Your link, by the way, doesn't cover frame rate conversion. So its implied the incoming signal is already capable of 120Hz/120FPS.

The XBox itself won't put out any faster than 60Hz... even if conversion works, you'll still have the video response time of a 60Hz/60FPS signal.

Now that is a pleasant surprise for those who hook something other than a TV up as a monitor. It would also suggest that the HDMI standard/version they're using now will also support it.
