Is it possible to hook up my laptop to my computer/monitor so I can switch between the two?

Too poor to have a second monitor, but I can see the benefit of one. Unfortunately, my laptop is not within reach, so I was wondering if I can use the mouse on my desktop to interact with it somehow.

Thanks!

You could use your desktop monitor as a second monitor with the laptop, but you can't use the laptop display as a second monitor for your desktop.

If your desktop monitor only has one input, you could use a KVM (keyboard, video, monitor) switch to give you two inputs.

Ah, yeah, I forgot to clarify. I have every intention of "remoting" into the laptop, y'know, switch into the mouse cursor of the other computer. I wasn't planning on using it as a second monitor, just as a second source to do work on, watch videos, etc. while I game or something.

Could you go into more detail on how to do that?

Yes, you can use either of these devices:
j5create JUC100 White Wormhole KM Switch Cable for Windows ONLY - $19.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812866001
or
j5create JUC 400 1.8m White Wormhole Switch (works with Windows and Apple products) - $29.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812866008

I own the latter and wrote the latest review on it (Peter L.) at Newegg. Cheaper than a KVM switch and you can drag your mouse between the two screens even though they are on different computers. It's a 5' 9" cable with a USB device (thumb drive size) on each end that contains all the drivers needed to run. Keyboard control also switches between screens/computers. More details in the review I wrote, but it works great for me.
